History of Baseball Outside The United States
As you well know, baseball was born in The United States of America in the mid 1800's and it has become a beloved sport by all Americans since then. But baseball has a huge following outside America, and has for a very long time. Baseball is something that is enjoyed by people all around the world.
In Cuba, students who couldn't afford school or had bad grades often dropped out of school and turned to baseball to try to make a living. They also used baseball as a way to distract themselves from their independence war in the late 1800's.
Around the same time, people in Spain were learning about the game of baseball as well. Because of the independence war, countries found another way to fight each other through baseball, which is a lot more enjoyable than war.
A couple of professional Cuban players went to Venezuela and started a team there, thus expanding the sport of baseball to another entire country. A couple years after Venezuela got a professional team, Puerto Rico also started a baseball team. So before the year 1900, the world was already falling in love with baseball.
From Spain and Puerto Rico, baseball expanded into Mexico. So before we knew it, the sport America invented was being played professionally right below our border. Today all over Central America, baseball is one of the most popular sports around, next to Soccer. Cuban leader Fidel Castro is a big fan of baseball, and rumor has it he was one of the best players in Cuba. The Cuban baseball team is one of the best professional teams in the world, winning national tournaments in Barcelona and Atlanta. Because baseball is so popular all over the world, there are many tournaments to try to determine the best of the best.
